Lord Krishna is called Govardhandhari because he lifted Mount Govardhan to protect the people of Vrindavan from a torrential downpour. The story is told in the Bhagwata Purana and other Puranas:
- King Indra, the ruler of heaven, sends rain clouds to flood Vrindavan to punish the people of Braj for sacrifices they made to appease him.
- Krishna lifts the mountain with his left hand and holds it up like an umbrella so that the people and their animals can take shelter.
- Indra’s pride is humbled, and he realizes that Krishna is Lord Vishnu.
- Indra descends from the heavens and bows down to Krishna, acknowledging him as the Supreme Lord.
